Le Corbusier: Iconic Chairs And Human Limb Objects

by admin 08 Oct 2019 0 Comments

When looking into iconic furniture and modern chair design, you will frequently find that furniture designers will also predominantly be involved in architecture. This is certainly true when examining the work of Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, otherwise known as Le Corbusier. From his work across many different aspects of the arts to his work designing modern accent chairs still loved by consumers today, it is clear that he is a name which should be held in high regard. Let’s take a closer look at some of his work.

Cubist Beginnings and Modern Inspiration

Le Corbusier was inspired in his youth by the Cubist movement. Many fine works of art by him are available to view in various museums around the world. When at art school, he was encouraged by his teacher L’Eplattenier to take up architecture. He, together with Amédée Ozenfant, also helped to found the artistic movement of Purism in 1918.

He also travelled a great deal and was given the opportunity to meet great artists like Gustav Klimt and work with many of the great architects of the day.

Architectural Achievements

It is for his architectural achievements that Le Corbusier is primarily remembered. Not only did he build many iconic buildings which have been recognised as having a particular importance, but he also had a hand in many other projects. He was one of the architects in the team who designed the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York and he also headed the design of the Indian city of Chandigarh.

His approach to urban planning was not always loved by governments but it most definitely helped to lead to a complete overhaul of how the subject was approached. His influence has helped to redefine how urban planners plan their projects even nowadays.

Furniture Design

Like many other architects, Le Corbusier also tried his hand at furniture design and came up with many iconic chairs which are still loved by collectors today. He firmly rejected the finely crafted furniture which was popular in his day and instead championed one of three types; type-needs, type-furniture, and human-limb objects. The latter is one he was very in favour of; describing it as a piece of furniture which could be an extension of the human limb. He furthered this thinking by comparing chair design to architecture.

Le Corbusier chairs are instantly recognisable. They use simple and natural materials like leather and steel and are designed to support your body perfectly.
